Upstairs at Duroc

In their own words, Upstairs at Duroc is “an international literary and arts journal that promotes innovative English language writing from the Paris area and around the world”, and their issue 12 is set to come out at the end of January. This means they are currently accepting submissions from across the literary board. Short stories, scripts, poetry, translations and cross-genre pieces are all welcome.

I admire them in particular because the editorial team is made up of volunteers from WICE, a non-profit Anglophone association that provides adult education and cultural activities to jolly foreigners like myself. Their mantra is:

To experience France to its fullest, you must live it, not temporarily or in isolation, but through active exploration of its culture, people, history and personality.

They also host evenings at the gorgeous Berkeley Books in the 6th (8 rue Casimir Delavigne), where an eager audience squeeze into every nook and cranny to hear readings once or twice a week. I would so desperately love to go on the 27th to celebrate issue 12 and hear new work from Amy Hollowell, Nina Karacosta, Alice Notley, Jonathan Regier and Joe Ross, but unfortunately the gods-that-be have put me on the rota for that Thursday evening….aw shucks.
